Vitslav I, Prince of Rügen

Wizlaw I. (* 1180, † June 7, 1250 ) was a prince of Rügen.

Life

Wizlaw was first mentioned in 1193. His parents were Prince Jaromar I and Hildegard of Denmark ( * ca 1135 ), daughter of Knut V. Magnusson of Denmark (ca. 1128-1157 ) and ( Sophie? ) Sverkersdotter of Sweden.

Wizlaw took in 1219 on a campaign of his lords, the Danish king Valdemar II to Estonia in part. After his brother Barnuta the resignation Wizlaw was I. 1221 documented as Prince of Rügen. This year for the first time German settlers in the Ruegen Festlandsbesitzungen are mentioned. In subsequent years, he again took part in wars on the side of Valdemar II, so in 1225 at the Battle of Mölln and 1227 at the Battle of Bornhöved. Despite the defeat of the Danes he held on feudal relation with Denmark firmly. In 1231 he founded the Cistercian monastery Neuenkamp (now Franzburg ). He gave 1234 Stralsund city rights and granted the town privileges such as fishing rights and duty-free. During his reign, the Principality of Rügen reached its greatest extent.
