Vittoria della Rovere

Vittoria della Rovere ( born February 7, 1622 Pesaro; † March 5, 1694 in Pisa) was the wife of Ferdinand II de ' Medici, Grand Duchess of Tuscany.

Vittoria was born in 1622 as the daughter of Federico Ubaldo della Rovere and Claudia de ' Medici. Already in 1623 she lost her father. Her mother Claudia de ' Medici returned to Florence and promised the two- year-old her cousin Ferdinando, the heir to the throne of Tuscany. 1626 married Claudia Leopold V of Tyrol, her daughter remained in Florence and was brought up by her grandmother Christine of Lorraine.

Vittoria della Rovere was the last and was considered the heir to the Duchy of Urbino. But after the death of her grandfather Francesco Maria II in 1631 Urbino fell to the Papal States. Vittoria inherited the rich art collection of her family and let them get to Florence. Today, the collection is part of the Uffizi Gallery.

1634 1623 already promised marriage between Vittoria and Ferdinand was closed. The marriage was very unhappy because Vittoria was bigoted and quarrelsome. Finally, the two were separated in two opposite wings of the Palazzo Pitti.
