Vittoria Light

Faro della Vittoria ( Victory Lighthouse ) is the lighthouse in the northern Italian port city of Trieste.

Location and data

The lighthouse is located on the coast of the Gulf of Trieste on a hill of Trieste district Gretta. The total height of the tower is 68.85 meters.

The beacon is approximately 115 meters above sea level, with a rotation time of 45 seconds and a range of 22 nautical miles.

Function

The lighthouse serves as a navigation aid in shipping and at the same monument to the fallen in World War Marines. On the tower the following inscription is found: splendi E Ricorda I CADUTI SUL MARE MCMXV - MCMXVIII ( light and Remember the fallen at sea 1915-1918 ).

Building

The lighthouse consists of a wide base, which was built on the former Austrian fortress Kressich. The foundation is based on blocks of stone from Istria and the Karst.

The conclusion of the lighthouse is a bronze dome, on which the 700- kg bronze figure Statua della Vittoria. The statue is the work of the sculptor Giovanni Mayer. Under the statue is the anchor of the destroyer Audace who crossed on 3 November 1918 in Trieste harbor and brought the first Italian troops in Trieste on land. The anchor was a gift from Admiral Paolo Thaon di Revel in the city of Trieste.

History

In 1918, the city planned to Trieste on the hill of Gretta to build on the site of the former fortress Kressich a lighthouse. The project was the Trieste architect Arduino Berlam (1880-1946) transfer, which began with the construction work in February 1923. On 24 May 1927, the lighthouse was opened in the presence of King Victor Emmanuel II, then, from this point, the function of the former Lighthouse Lanterna, which is located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Trieste in Porto Vecchio. Since 1986, the lighthouse is open to visitors.
