In historical times, the place Vitznau was first mentioned in 998 as a possession of the monastery Ragaz. 1282 he belonged to the Habsburgs and was purchased in 1380 as part of Weggis from the city of Lucerne. Since Vitznau to 1798 no separate municipality, but a district of Weggis was, she shared his fate and was part of the bailiwick of Weggis. From 1798 to 1803 she was a village in the district of Lucerne and then came to the newly created district of Lucerne. The project discussed merger of Greppen, Weggis and Vitznau, (possibly under the name Rigi municipality ) in 2005 moved indefinitely, since all three municipalities are financially healthy - and so there is no cost pressure for a merger.
