Viuz-la-Chiésaz

Viuz la Chiésaz is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Viuz la Chiésaz is located on 585 m above sea level. M., 11 km south-southwest of the town of Annecy (air line). The farming village extends a scenic location in the foothills of the Alps, in Albanais, on a plateau east of the valley of Chéran, at the foot of Semnoz.

The area of ​​13.91 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Albanais. The central area is occupied by a plateau (560 m above sea level. M. ), which has at various points in marshy areas. It is drained by several short streams west to Chéran. To the east, the municipality's area extends over a gently at first, later steep, densely forested slopes to the wide ridge of Semnoz, which is counted to the massif of the Wallows. In the viewpoint of the Cret du Châtillon, a covered alpine meadows knoll is with 1699 m above sea. M. reached the highest elevation of Viuz la Chiésaz.

History

The territory of Viuz la Chiésaz was settled very early. From the Roman period wall foundations of a villa have been preserved; the place was situated on the Roman road from Boutae (Annecy ) by Aquae ( Aix -les- Bains ) led. From the Burgundian generates a burial ground.

First mentioned, however, the place is only at the beginning of the 15th century. For a long time the spelling of Vieux- la -Chiésaz was used. Viuz is derived from the Latin word vicus (village, hamlet ), respectively viculus ( hamlet ). In the 12th century the Cluniac Priory here Saint -Jean -Baptiste was founded, which passed into the possession of the Abbey of Talloires in the 17th century. It was canceled and destroyed during the French Revolution.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint- Etienne was built in 1903 in the Romanesque Revival style. From the former priory, a baptismal font is only obtained. The medieval manor in Barreau was restored.

Population

With 1257 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Viuz la Chiésaz one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the population steadily increased due to high levels of emigration from (1861 were still 646 residents counted in Viuz la Chiésaz ). Since the mid- 1970s was, however, thanks to the beautiful residential area and close to Annecy again recorded a marked increase in population.
