Viv Anderson

Vivian Alexander " Viv " Anderson ( born July 29, 1956 in Nottingham ) is an English former football player and the first black England international.

The career milestone for Anderson as a right-back was the first use on 29 November 1978, when he played at Wembley for the first time for England against Czechoslovakia. England won this important match 2-1, although Anderson's National team career should prove more than a story of the second best in the connection.

Footballing career

Anderson came in 1974 to the first team of Nottingham Forest and two years later, when Brian Clough the sporting management took over, starting players. He was part of the team that in 1977 secured the rise in the highest English league and only a year later than promoted the English First Division Championship in 1977/78, together with the League Cup, won.

When Anderson was appointed by Ron Greenwood in the national team, said the England coach that the nomination not stand in connection with political issues, nor is it justified by the growing number of dark-skinned players in professional football, but solely as a result of its strong performance in was to see an in-form team. As edged defender he was famous for his tackles and was also able to shoot some crucial goals in his rapid advances in the offensive. A further justification for his nomination was the re winning the League Cup and, after Malmö FF was defeated in the final, the victory in the European Cup Champion 1978 / 79th His first assignment for England took place in the match against Czechoslovakia at Wembley Stadium on November 29, 1978.

Anderson found himself exposed in the national team of hard competition for the position of right-back at that time. The prestigious Liverpool's Phil Neal was the end of the 1970s and early 1980s, the first choice for this position and Trevor Cherry, captain of Leeds United, also Fullback, was also nominated regularly. Anderson therefore had to patiently wait for his second outing, which then in June 1979 was followed in a friendly against Sweden. His third use, synonymous with his first competitive game was the qualifier for the European Championships in Italy in 1980 against Bulgaria, which England won 3-0 at Wembley.

Anderson won with his club Nottingham Forest at this time his next success, as in the final of the European Champions' Cup 1979/80 in Madrid, Hamburger SV was defeated and so the title could be defended from the previous year.

After England had qualified for the European Championships in Italy, Anderson was appointed to the squad and played in the last game as a substitute for Neal against Spain. England won that match 2-1, but still different from the competition. A short time later, Anderson was used in the first qualifier for the 1982 World Cup in Spain against Norway, which England won 4-0. After the successful qualification and the struggle for position between Anderson and Neal, however, should be deemed neither of them more than regular players.

Due to the injury of Kevin Keegan Greenwood needed an experienced captain, who was to lead the England team in Spain. The choice fell on the captain of Ipswich Town, Mick Mills, who, although normally but acted as a left-back due to the undisputed Kenny Sansom on this page moved to the right so that neither Neal nor Anderson use could be found. Neal played in the final group game against Kuwait to allow Mills to already seized qualification a break. This then played again in the second stage of the tournament, which no longer was the English team. Anderson came while not used.

When the great time Nottingham Forest came to an end (the next trophy after the European Cup success in 1980 followed nine years later), and Anderson's international career seemed to stagnate. After the World Cup and the disposal Greenwoods he was no longer called by new coach Bobby Robson to 1984 and Neal still preferred. England failed to qualify for Euro 1984 in France and Anderson came after two years of absence in April 1984 to his eleventh international match. In the same year he moved for 220,000 British pounds for Arsenal and hoped this would revive his career.

This decision also had a beneficial and Anderson was used in six consecutive games 1984-1985, inclusive of four qualifying matches for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, where he in the first game, his first goal for England contributed to the 8-0 win against Turkey. After Robson gave the young Gary Stevens Everton a chance at right back. When he was able to convince Robson, Anderson was again as a reserve player on the bench again. Robson rotated to this position regularly, but Stevens received a total of more inserts. After England had qualified for the World Cup, and both players were nominated, Anderson was only spare man behind Stevens.

Stevens graduated from the entire tournament in Mexico to Off in the quarter-final against a dominated by Diego Maradona Argentine team. Again Anderson had traveled to a World Cup tournament, without having been even a minute on the football field. So Anderson is one of the few field players who were the same for several world championships in the squad, without having been used.

At the end of 1986, when England began to qualify for the European Championship in Germany in 1988, Anderson scored his second and last Nationalmannschaftstor in the match against Yugoslavia.

In 1987 he achieved with Arsenal after eight years back a trophy, as in the League Cup Liverpool was defeated 2-1. In the same year he moved for 250,000 British pounds to Manchester United, and here was the first shopping from Alex Ferguson, who was heading his first season there. The followers of Arsenal regretted this move and were confirmed when George Graham was an adequate substitute and with the inexperienced midfielder Michael Thomas and the left-footed Nigel Winterburn tried unsatisfactory expedients. Ultimately, the problem was solved by the arrival of Lee Dixon.

In the meantime, Stevens found his way back into the England team and Anderson's 30 international match during the Rous Cup against Colombia was also his last, although he later was also in the squad for the European Championship. England lost all three group games, while also Stevens has been heavily criticized, but defended his place in the team. Also in his third major tournament in a row, Anderson was thus without using minutes. As Robson then looked for alternatives to younger Stevens, international career ended with this decision Andersons.

Anderson completed three seasons at Manchester United, but it had to always struggle with injuries and was then sold to Sheffield Wednesday. In his first season in Hillsborough, where he managed to climb into the newly formed Premier League. Then he reached in 1993, both in the League Cup and FA Cup, the finals and lost both against his old club Arsenal.

Later, he briefly became coach of FC Barnsley and then part of the coaching staff of his former goal Bryan Robson at Middlesbrough FC, where he had ended his active football career in 1995. When Robson left the club in 2001, Anderson went and returned since then not go back to football.

1997 Anderson was selected in a vote among fans of Nottingham Forest with a 96 percent approval in the best eleven of all time for the right-back posts.
