Vivian Campbell

Vivian Patrick Campbell ( born August 25, 1962 in Lisburn ) is a Northern Irish rock musician. He is a member of the group Def Leppard and was from May 2010 to 2011 guitarist in the band Thin Lizzy. Before a member of Def Leppard in 1992, he played among others with Whitesnake, Riverdogs, and Shadow King. He was first known as the guitarist of the band Dio, which he joined in 1982. He is co- author of the song Stars, which was formed in 1985 to collect donations for the victims of the 1984-1985 famine in Ethiopia.

Biography

Youth and early career

Campbell was born in Lisburn ( County Antrim ) and attended Rathmore Grammar School. At the age of 12 he began playing guitar. He was guitarist of the band Sweet Savage, before he founded by Ronnie James Dio Dio joined formation with which he became internationally known.

Sweet Savage

Sweet Savage was a NWOBHM band, came to Campbell, when he was 15 years old. The group included not only the drummer Campbell David Bates and bassist and singer Ray Haller. The group also influenced Metallica, recorded the a cover version of the song " Killing Time " for their album Garage Inc.. Sweet Savage released an EP in 1981, the next four BBC radio sessions also their first single, " Take No Prisoners " contained. B- side of the single was " Killing Time ". Campbell left the band in early 1983 to change as the successor to Jake E. Lee to Dio. Lee had accepted the offer to play for the late Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne 's band.

Much later, in the 1990s, there was renewed interest in Sweet Savage, and the band put out an album without Campbell's participation.

Dio

When Campbell joined Dio, Ronnie James Dio, Vinny Appice and former Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain had already completed most of the songs of her debut album Holy Diver. After a worldwide search for a suitable guitarist had been concluded with the signing of Campbell, now the first occupation of the young band was clear. The album was successful, and the band played, among others, on the Monsters of Rock festival in 1983.

The band went back into the studio soon to record the second album, which was given the title The Last in Line and climbed to number 23 of the U.S. album charts. The third album, Sacred Heart, was successful and reached number 29 on the U.S. charts. It contained the title " Hungry for Heaven", which was released on the soundtrack to the movie Vision Quest. The band had also recorded " Hide in the Rainbow" for the soundtrack to the movie Iron Eagle. This song was the last on which Campbell participated. For the live EP Intermission already recorded rhythm guitars were re-recorded by Craig Goldy, Campbells parts were dubbed. Goldy was for the guitar sparts on the only studio track on the album, "Time to Burn" responsible. Campbell left the band in 1986 and moved to White Snake. Craig Goldy was shortly after presented as a new member of the band.

Whitesnake

1987 Campbell became a member of the British hard rock band Whitesnake. Ex -Thin Lizzy and Tygers of Pan Tang guitarist John Sykes wrote and played the lead and rhythm parts of the simply titled Whitesnake album, but had been fired after the completion of the recordings of David Coverdale. Campbell was hired as a substitute and played alongside Adrian Vandenberg (teaser, Vandenberg ), Tommy Aldridge ( Ozzy Osbourne ) and bassist Rudy Sarzo ( Black Oak Arkansas, Quiet Riot ). Campbell left the band after the world tour 1987/1988.

Def Leppard

Campbell was in 1992 a member of the group Def Leppard after their album Adrenalize had been published. It replaced the deceased on 8 January 1991 Steve Clark. Making his first appearance with the group had Campbell at a club in Dublin before about 600 spectators, only a week later, on 20 April 1992, the band appeared at the Freddie Mercury Concert for Life. Other projects

In addition to his work with Def Leppard Campbell also played with the bands Clock and Riverdogs. In 2005 he published a solo album titled Two Sides Of If, on which he has recorded many cover versions of his favorite blues songs, the album also includes a self- written blues title. Private

Campbell lives in California and has two daughters named Lily Rose and Una Marigold. He is a regular player of soccer club Hollywood United FC, ​​which consists mainly of celebrities and former professional football players. In June 2013 Campbell announced that he was suffering from cancer and will undergo a six-month chemotherapy.
