Vizille

Vizille is a commune with 7725 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Isère, in the Rhône -Alpes; it belongs to the district of Grenoble and is the administrative center of the canton Vizille.

History

In ancient times Vizille was a fortified town called oppidum Antiquum. She lay on Alpine crossing the Col du Lautaret to Grenoble to the often had to contend with the Allobroges the Romans. The Roman fort was called Castra Vigiliae.

In the 10th century Vizille belonged partly to the Cluny Abbey. The castle of the village was acquired by François de Bonne, duc de Lesdiguières and rebuilt, after he had become lieutenant general of the Dauphiné.

For the July 21, 1788, after the Journée of Roman tiles (June 7 ), which marks the beginning of the French Revolution in the region, the notables organized the Assemblée de Vizille, in which 50 priests, 165 noblemen and 276 members of the Third object ( such as Jean -Joseph Mounier and Antoine Barnave ) met.

Vizille is located on the Route Napoléon (see Charles- Angélique Huchet, comte de Labedoyere ).
