Vladimir Afromeev

Vladimir Ilyich Afromejew (Russian: Владимир Ильич Афромеев; born April 2, 1954 in Tula ) is a Russian businessman, chess player and organizer. He bears the title of FIDE Master and is since 2000 also International Referee.

Life

Remarkable for its Elo rating of 2646, with which he was led in July 2008 to 78th place in the world rankings. He was the only one among the world's top 100 players, which does not bore the title of Grand Master. Given the fact that Afromejew his success in tournaments scoring, which he himself had organized, he was accused of Grandmaster Alexander Baburin to have cheated. 2007 Afromejew won a tournament in his hometown of Tula, which was attended by mostly completely unknown players, with 13 points from 13 games. The chess journalist Mark Crowther expressed then in The Week in Chess doubts whether the Elo rating Afromejews came legally into existence. In a telephone interview with The New York Times Afromejew replied to the criticism of its high Elo, that he had many envious because of his wealth and the country could not leave because of his business relationship with the Russian Ministry of Defense, to play tournaments abroad.
