Vladimir Belyayev (weightlifter)

Vladimir Belyayev (Russian Володимир Миколайович Бєляєв; * September 24, 1940 ) is a former Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Vladimir Belyayev, a blond Ukrainians, operating as a teenager some other sports as weightlifting, but then came in the army with the weight lifting in touch. It was this very talented and trained diligently. As the first regional successes had set, Yakov Krinizki took over his training and led him quickly into the Soviet top. Even with nearly 22 years occupied Wladimir third place in the Soviet championships in the middleweight division (then to 75 kg body weight). Later, he grew up in the light heavyweight (up to 82.5 kg of body weight) into it.

In this weight class he had also recorded his greatest success, for he became world and European champion and won at the 1968 Olympic Games silver medal behind compatriot Boris Selitski. One of the most exciting fights of weightlifting history he delivered in 1966 at the World Championships in Berlin against Hungary Veres Győző. After tearing both athletes were on par with 295 kg. Vladimir Belyayev but had the advantage of a few hundred grams lighter than being Veres. Veres came then 180, 185 and the new world record of 190 kg, but Belyayev was reloading every time and push the same weight. His reward was the World Cup and European Championship title with 485 kg. Interestingly, Vladimir Belyayev could never be Soviet masters. The competition was very strong in his own country in his time.
