Vladimir Central Prison

Vladimirovka - official Russian name: Владимирский централ Wladimirskij Central ( Central Prison Vladimir) - is a prison in the Russian city of Vladimir. It dates from the late 18th century.

History

The prison was built by order of Russian Empress Catherine II in 1783. In the maximum-security prison, built in 1825, now houses the City Detention Center Vladimir. In 1906 it was renamed the Central Prison. Among the inmates of the prison were numerous members of the German Wehrmacht and Soviet dissidents. In 1996, a museum was built on a part of the prison grounds.
