The race is to go back to one of Ivan the Terrible in the 16th century based stud farm. The origin formed by the end of the 19th century by crossing out large-framed, indigenous land mares first with Suffolk Punch and Cleveland Bays, and to a lesser extent Percherons, Arden formers and of Brabant.

From around 1920, only imported from the UK Clydesdales were ( so the stallions Lord James and Border Brand, * 1910, and Glen Albin, * 1923) and crossed to a lesser extent Shire Horses. As a result, the best animals were bred pure. The breed was recognized in 1946.

The main stud for the Vladimir Heavy Draft is now the stud Gawrilowo - Possadski (No. 49) in Gavrilov Posad. Outside the area of origin, inter alia, the horse in the stud # 23 in Potschinki ( Nizhny Novgorod ) and on the horse farm is " Orlowski faworit " in the village Gagarino ( Rajon Ishim, Tyumen Oblast, Western Siberia ) bred.
