Vlky

Vlky ( German nickel village, Hungarian VOK ) is a small municipality in Bratislavskı Region in the south-west Slovakia.

Geography

The place is located in the Danubian Lowland in the north- western part of the Great Rye Island on the right bank of the Little Danube. The village is only accessible by road from Tomášov (3 miles) and is 21 km away from the capital Bratislava.

History

The village was first mentioned in 1260 as Welk and belonged to the Bratislava Chapter and provost, which benefited from fishing in the community since the end of the 13th century. In the 16th century the neighboring Banvelk merged with Vlky which belonged since the 17th century, the Palffy family.

Until 1918, the place was in the county Pressburg in the Kingdom of Hungary and came afterwards to the newly formed Czechoslovakia. On the basis of the First Vienna Award, the place was once part of Hungary 1938-45.
