VMFD Žalgiris Vilnius

The VMFD Zalgiris is a football club based in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius and currently plays in the first division.

History

Zalgiris Vilnius was founded on 3 January 1947, when Lithuania was part of the Soviet Union. The club spent a total of eleven seasons, the first time in 1953, the highest in the Soviet League, making him the most successful club of the Lithuanian Union Republic of the USSR.

Since 1990, Zalgiris Vilnius plays in their own Lithuanian league. The club colors are traditionally green and white. Previously, the club was able to gain three times the Lithuanian Championship ( 1991, 1992, 1999), which are compared with six Cup victories (1966, 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, 2003). Zalgiris Vilnius played until some time in 1950 built Zalgiris Stadium, which has a capacity of 15,030 seats. Currently the club is established in 2011-2012 converted LFF stadium with 5,422 seats.

The club has been renamed three times. In its inception it was called " Dinamo ", from 1948 to 1961 was the epithet " Spartakas ". Since 1962 the association " Zalgiris " is in memory of the Battle of Grunwald (1410 ).

Zalgiris Vilnius won the first two editions of the Baltic League. In 1990, the club conceded in the competition, which was discharged completely in league mode, only one defeat in 32 games, 1993/94 Zalgiris won in the final 10-9 on penalties against Skonto Riga.

After the 2008 season, which finished in fifth -placed Zalgiris, the club was denied a license for the first division and a demotion to the second division decided, after fans had the club under the name VMFD Zalgiris re-established.
