Vodice, Croatia

Vodice (Croatian for "little water "; Vodizze Italian ) is a small town in the Šibenik -Knin in Dalmatia.

It is located 10 km north-west of Sibenik on the Adriatic coast and has, according to census from the year 2011 8,875 inhabitants, of whom 94.30 % were Croats.

Vodice is a popular tourist destination, and therefore makes the summer tourism the main industry of Vodice from. In surveys, it was declared several years in a row to become the third most popular Dalmatian coastal city. Most of the inhabitants of Vodice provide for tourist accommodation available, whether in hotels, apartments or rooms.

History

Already during the Roman rule over Dalmatia, the town was founded as Arausa. Vodice was first mentioned in historical documents in 1402, when the construction of the church of Sv. Kriz began. The city's name derives from the word voda for water with which Vodice at that time supplied the surrounding area. The defensive walls and the Ćorić Tower ( Croatian: Ćorićev toranj ) from the times of the Turkish conquests evidence of these past times.

Attractions

Other notable monuments in Vodice are the old 1421 completed discovery Cross Church (Croatian: Sveti Kriz ) and the parish church built in 1746 in the city center. Two kilometers from the city center, on the mountain Okit, is the newly built church of the Holy Mother of God of Mount Carmel. From Okit can enjoy a view worthy views over the whole area of Vodice, about Prvić, Zlarin and other offshore islands.
