Võisiku

Võisiku ( German Woiseck ) is a village (Estonian küla ) in the Estonian rural municipality in the district of Põltsamaa Jõgeva. It has 436 inhabitants (as of 2006).

Geography

Võisiku lies about 5 km southwest of the city Põltsamaa ( Oberpahlen ).

History

The place originally belonged to the reign of the Order of the castle of Põltsamaa. The manor of Võisiku was first mentioned in documents in 1558. That same year, local farmers burned down the manor in connection with the Livonian War ( 1558-1583 ). Only in 1632 it was rebuilt. It belonged to the parish Kolga -Jaani in Viljandi County.

From 1583 to 1919 belonged successively Võisiku major German Baltic families ( Fick, of Dückerstieg, von Bock, von Manteuffel, von Samson- Himmelstjerna, of the mills). The most famous owner was Timothy Eberhard von Bock (1787-1836), who was first a friend of Tsar Alexander I of Russia, but as opponents of the regime was later imprisoned. It lies in the cemetery of Kundrussaare about 1.5 km west of Võisiku buried. In the 19th century came to the manor numerous farms: a distillery, a sawmill, a glass and tile factory, equipment for cheese production as well as a dairy farm.

In 1920 the manor house was expropriated by the Estonian state, in 1925 there einrichtete a home. Today, the manor of Võisiku a nursing home for 400 mentally disabled. The house is surrounded by a two acre park.
