The stratovolcano is located Atitlan in Guatemala and is the highest of three prominent volcanoes at the southern end of the Atitlan III caldera. Together with its twin volcano Toliman and the volcano San Pedro, it forms an impressive panorama at the shore of Lake Atitlan.

Atitlan is younger than the voluminous 85,000 -year-old Los Chocoyos - tephra layers, which were deposited in the formation of the caldera. The northern part of the volcano is wooded, the upper 1000 meters of the southern part of the crater, however, show no vegetation. Since the 15th century explosive eruptions have been recorded repeatedly.
