Voldemārs Zāmuēls

Voldemars Zāmuels (born 10 Maijul / May 22 1872greg in Dzērbene, Cesis district, .. † January 16, 1948 in Ravensburg ) was Latvian politician and Prime Minister of the Democratic Centre Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ).

Life

Zāmuels graduated from the University of Tartu in Estonia. He was already on 30 November 1917 to 17 November 1918 as a non-party Chairman of the Provisional National Council.

After Latvia's independence on 18 November 1918, he was on December 19, 1918 Supreme Court Justice. Later he was on September 23, 1919 General Prosecutor of the Supreme Court.

Subsequently, he was a deputy of the Legislative Assembly ( Satversmes sapulce ), where he represented the interests of the Democratic Centre Party ( Demokrātiskā Centra Partija ). On June 19, 1921 Prime Minister him Zigfrīds Anna Meierovics appointed Minister of Agriculture. This office he held until July 20, 1922.

On January 27, 1924, he was finally appointed as the successor of Meierovics himself as prime minister. Since Latvia's independence, he became the first Prime Minister who is not the party Farmers' Union of Latvia ( Latviešu Zemnieku Savieniba ) belonged. In his reigning until December 18, 1924 cabinet he took over until 9 April 1924 the Office of the Minister of Justice. Successor as Prime Minister was Hugo Celmins.

In the presidential elections in 1927, he ran for one of five candidates unsuccessfully against Gustavus Zemgals, who also belonged to the Democratic Centre Party. During the Second World War he was living in exile in Germany.
