Volga Finns#Merya

The Merja (also Merä ) were Finno- Ugric people in an area of the Russian cities of Moscow, Rostov, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Vladimir. The Merja could have been a western branch of Mari. The word Merja is therefore a Russian transcription of the word Мäрӹ ( Märӛ ), an existing self behalf of Western Mari. The toponyms of the area of the Merja have been identified on the basis of Mari. Furthermore, calls the medieval Russian chronicle Kazanskaya Istoriia the Cheremises ( Mari ) than the indigenous inhabitants of Rostov.

Modern Merjanen

Even today some of the inhabitants refer to the Oblasty Yaroslavl and Kostroma as Merjanen. By 2010, these people were, however, conducted in the Russian census as Russians.

The feature film Silent Souls by Russian director Alexei Fedorchenko from 2010 shows the pseudo - life of the modern Merjanen that no longer actually exist.
