Volgelsheim

Volgelsheim is an Alsatian village with 2368 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Canton of Neuf- Brisach in the arrondissement of Colmar, the French Department of Haut-Rhin. The community is home to the comprehensive 21 municipalities municipal association Pays de Brisach.

Geography

The village is located in the French part of the Upper Rhine valley close to the Rhine at about the level of Breisach. Neighboring municipalities are in the north Biesheim, in the east, Bird, Green, on the south and west Algolsheim immediately thereafter Neuf- Brisach. History

Volgelsheim was first mentioned in 739 under the name Folcoaldeshaim. The name has changed over the centuries several times up to the present notation. From 1871 to 1918 Volgelsheim belonged to the kingdom land Alsace-Lorraine to the German Empire. During this time, 1880, the railway station on the line Freiburg -Colmar was built in the Prussian style, and later the railroad Neuf- Brisach Bantzenheim branched off to the, and in 1902 a barracks for the Prussian army. The station was in 1937 in the film The Great Illusion by Jean Renoir.

Until 1992 Volgelsheim garrison of the French army was ( barracks Abbatucci ).

Demographics

Museum Railway

From Volgelsheim runs a museum railway line on a 13 km long section of the former railway line to Marckolsheim. Train rides are Sundays and public holidays daily between May and September in conjunction with a boat trip on the Rhine by the Association Chemin de Fer Touristique du Rhin.
