Volgograd Metrotram

The Metro Tram Volgograd (Russian Волгоградский метротрам / Wolgogradski metro tram ) is a fast tram in the Russian city of Volgograd. It is similar to a light rail and complements conventional tram.

Description

The 17.3 -kilometer Volgograd Metro Tram was on November 5, 1984 between Traktorny zavod ( WGTS ) ( Тракторный завод ( ВГТЗ ) ) and Ploshchad Tschekistow ( Площадь Чекистов ) taken at 13.5 km in operation, linking the northern suburbs of Volgograd with the city center. On 1 December 2011, the Metro Tram was first extended from Pionerskaya ( Пионерская ) to 3 other underground stations to Yelshanka ( Ельшанка ). Five of the 22 stations are located underground. The length of the underground section opened in 1984 the line is 3.3 km, which opened the 2011 extension of 3.5 km.

With the extension to Yelshanka ( Ельшанка ) the previous southern terminus was Ploshchad Tschekistow ( Площадь Чекистов ) to a two- guest; Therefore, the following line numbers were introduced at the same time:

The travel time on the entire line ST1 is on average 32 minutes. The line ST2 ST2 adds to the line in the north to the Stadium station monolith ( Стадион Монолит ) where to transfer to the tram line 13 is. Volgograd Metro Tram carried before the first extension of around 50 million passengers annually and thus relieves the urban network of Elektritschkas.

On their aboveground part of the Metro Tram in part uses the tracks of the ordinary tram. As a special feature the Metro Tram runs on its underground section partly in left-hand traffic. This was due to the use of central platforms in combination with means vehicles that have only on the right side of the vehicle entrances. This is the case in at stations Lenin Square and Komsomolskaya. The change of sides takes place each without crossing. The new vehicles are bi-directional car with passenger doors on both sides, so that the platform side is irrelevant for these trams.

Expansion plans

Current plans include a further 3.5 kilometers long Südverlängerung three stops to the university; their opening could take place before 2015. In the longer term, the option is kept open to convert the line into a full-fledged subway with high platforms and more powerful fleet. This is, for example, it can be seen that lead down a few steps to the platform in the underground stations at the bottom of the escalators. The tunnel portals on the opposite end wall give the impression as if the platform behind it even further would.

Further extensions of the existing crossing-free route out, especially to the north, and the construction of a new line are possible.
