Volker Beck (athlete)

Volker Beck ( * June 30, 1956 in Nordhausen ) is a German athlete who mainly started in the 400m hurdles. In this discipline he was for the GDR Olympic champion in Moscow in 1980 and is thus the only German 400 - meter hurdles Olympic champion. He profited, however, from the Olympic boycott of the United States, due to which the overwhelming favorites Edwin Moses was not at the start. He also won a silver medal in Moscow with the 4 x 400 - meter relay in the GDR.

Other successes

Volker Beck was a member of the sports club SC Turbine Erfurt. At a size of 1.91 m, it had a competition weight of 82 kg.

After his playing career Volker Beck has worked as a trainer, including as national coach for the German Athletics Federation (DLV ) and the LG Eintracht Frankfurt ( Main), where he supervised 400 -meter runners as well as the now- retired Olympic gold medalist in 2000 in the 800 - meter race, Nils Schumann.
