Volker Winkler

Volker Winkler ( born July 20, 1957 in Merseburg ) is a former German cyclist in track cycling and current cycling coach.

Volker Winkler began his cycling career in 1968 in Lubben. In 1970 he moved to SC Cottbus, where he trained under Schorten Lutz Fischer, Gerd Mueller and Ullrich. At the Junior World Championships on the road he won in 1975 with the team of the German Democratic Republic the bronze medal.

Four times was Winkler World Champion in the Team Pursuit, 1977, 1978, 1979 and 1981. At the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, he finished second in the team pursuit, together with Matthias Wiegand, Uwe Unterwalder and Gerald Mortag behind the team of the USSR in second place.

1985 ended Volker Winkler, a skilled Diesellokschlosser, his career and became a coach at SC Cottbus. From 1996 to 2000 Volker Winkler worked as a sprint coach at RSC Cottbus. Subsequently, he was country manager for students and youth at the Berlin Cycling Federation.
