Volkert Overlander

Knight Volkert Overlander ( born October 7, 1570 Amsterdam, † October 18, 1630 ) was a mayor of Amsterdam from the Golden Age of the Netherlands.

Biography

He was the son of Nicolaes Overlander and Catharina Sijs In 1599 he married Geertruyd Jansdochter Hooft ( 1578-1636 ), with whom he had ten children together. Hooft's brother Pieter Jansz Hooft married to Overlanders sister Gertruid ( 1577-1653 ). His daughter Maria (1603-1678) married Frans Banning Cocq, and Geertruid (1609-1634) he married Cornelis de Graeff. Overlander lived in the city Palais De Dolphijn in the Amsterdam Singel.

From 1605 he sat in the municipal government of Amsterdam, and from 1614 to 1621 in the Admiralty of the city, the largest and most powerful of the five Dutch Admiralties. In the years 1621 and 1628 Overlander was reigning mayor of his hometown, and could thus provide the remonstrantisch minded to more recognition. Also entered Overlander as a wealthy ship owner on, and was raised in 1620 by King James I for his contribution to this of the hereditary knighthood.

In 1618 Overlander acquired from the Earl Egmondschen bankrupt by the High glory of Purmerland and Ilpendam of the States of Holland. At an even dating back to the war with Spain Schanze he built himself Ilpenstein, the new palace of glory. It was also Overlander, the first reeve of Purmer.

Shortly before his death Volkert Overlander has been appointed alderman of the States of Holland, based in The Hague.
