Volkmar Andreae

Volkmar Andreae ( born July 5, 1879 in Bern, † 19 June 1962, Zurich ) was a Swiss conductor and composer.

Life

Andreae was given piano lessons as a child and his first composition lessons with Karl Munzinger. From 1897 to 1900 he studied at the Cologne University of Music and was a student of Fritz Brun, Franz Wüllner and Friedrich Wilhelm Franke. In 1900, he was a coach of the Munich Court Opera. In 1902 he took over the management of the Joint choir Zurich, which he headed until 1949, along with 1902 to 1914 the management of the Stadtsängerverein Winterthur and 1904-1914 of the men's choir Zurich.

From 1906 to 1949 he headed the Tonhalle Orchestra and from 1914 to 1939 the Conservatory of Zurich. Later, he lived as an editor and freelance composer in Vienna and joined internationally as a conductor. His special love was the symphonies of Anton Bruckner, of which he also 1953, the first complete recording presented for the Austrian Broadcasting with the Wiener Symphoniker at all. As this cycle until 2009 appeared on CD, Andreae was used for Bruckner however long little known.

Andreae's compositions include operas, symphonic and chamber works, a piano, a violin and an oboe concerto, piano music, choral music and songs.
