Volleyball at the 1984 Summer Olympics

At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles in volleyball tournaments for men and women were discharged.

Mode

For men, the ten qualified teams were drawn into two groups of five participants. The preliminary round was " every man for himself " played according to the mode. The top two teams from each group met in the semifinals cross each other. The remaining teams played from positions five to ten.

For women, there were two groups of four participants. The top two teams from each group met in the semifinals cross each other. The remaining teams played from positions five to eight.

The games were held in Los Angeles from July 29 to August 11. Venue was the Long Beach Arena.

Preliminary round

In group A, were at the end of three teams tied. The better set ratio brought Brazil and the U.S. to the semifinals. In group B, the two best teams met each other at the beginning. Despite the win against Canada, Italy remained only the second place in the table.

Final round

Tunisia won the battle of the winless in the preliminary round underdogs against Egypt in five sets, finishing in ninth place.

In the semifinals on August 8, the U.S. won the North American duel against Canada in three sets. Brazil defeated the Italians, who then picked up the bronze medal. The final on August 11 decided the Americans to Charles Kiraly for themselves.

In Group A, Japan took three wins in three games the first place. Peru reached the semifinals with two wins. In group B, the German women lost their first two games against the eventual finalists, USA and China. Therefore, there was only the third place after the final victory against Brazil.

Final round

After a win against Canada and one defeat against South Korea, the women of the DVV reached the sixth.

In the semifinals on August 5, the U.S. prevailed against Peru, while China won the Asian duel against Japan. The Japanese secured then the bronze medal. China decided the finals on August 9 against the United States itself.
