History

The World Cup was first held in 1965 to fill the gap between the most important volleyball competitions (Olympic Games and World Championships ). He took first place in the year after the Olympic Games. Thus, it was within four years, only one year without major tournament. The first two editions in 1965 in Warsaw and Berlin in 1969 alone were reserved for men. 1973 in Montevideo there was the first time a competition for the women. These three tournaments were held at different locations. Before the next tournament in 1977 but it was decided to Japan as a permanent venue for the World Cup.

The introduction of the World League and World Grand Prix in the 1990s meant that the original idea of the World Cup could no longer be maintained. However, the world FIVB did not adjust for lack of interest in the proven competition and therefore decided in 1991 for a change of format. As of now, the tournament took place one year before the Olympics and was considered as qualifying for the Olympics, where the winner was guaranteed a fixed launch site. This decision saved the competition. The ability to qualify early for the Olympics and thus an exhausting continental qualification to go out of the way, motivating the teams to participate in the World Cup. In 1995, the number of qualifying for the Olympic team was increased to three. This rule applies today.
