Volsci

The Volscians (Latin: Volsci ) was an Osco - Umbrian language belonging to the group of Italic tribe.

Originally probably Volsinii originating in Etruria, emigrated from the Volscians to Latium, where they (today Monti Lepini ) and settled in the Volskerbergen in Lirital.

Since the 6th century BC, they repeatedly led war against Rome. The Romans succeeded in definitively only in the years 338-329 BC, to subdue the Volscians. They confessed them to the status of allies and gave them the Latin citizenship.

Language

From the language of the Volsci few short inscriptions are known:

  • One owner inscription from the first half of the 5th century BC
  • A bronze plaque with a religious text dating from the 3rd century BC, possibly from Velitrae ( Velletri ) comes
  • A bronze plaque with a dedicatory inscription from Antinum in Liristal
