Volta potential

In electrochemistry is understood Volta voltage the difference of the external electric potential, due to the excess charges of opposite sign at the phase boundaries.

Together with the known as the Galvani voltage difference between the inner electric potentials results in the total potential difference between two phases. The different types of potential differences play a role in the exact treatment of galvanic cells.

The name goes back to the Italian naturalist and inventor Alessandro Volta.
