Voltage-gated ion channel
Voltage- gated ion channels ( or voltage- gated ion channels ) are transmembrane proteins which form in the ion-permeable membrane pores which open as a function of membrane potential or close. These channels contain charged amino acids, which can be moved by changes in the electric field across the membrane. This leads to a conformational change of the protein, and thus an opening or closing.
Rich in voltage-gated ion channels are electrically excitable cells such as neurons.
