Volvo FH

The Volvo FH is a truck model for long-distance transport of Volvo Trucks. The series was introduced in 1993 as a successor to the Volvo F 10, F 12 Volvo and Volvo F 16 with the models FH 12 FH 16 and after seven years of development time. The series was revised in 1998, 2002 and 2008. 2005 FH 12 has been replaced by the equipped with a new 12.8 -liter engine FH 13. Since 1993, over 400,000 Volvo FH have been built.

  • 2.1 chassis
  • 2.2 cab variants
  • 2.3 engines and powertrain
  • 2.4 New driver assistance and safety systems

First Generation 1993-2002 Second Generation 2002-2013 and

The cab has been developed with the main objectives, compared to the cabs of the F- model with less weight and better aerodynamics more safety and ergonomics to offer. At the start of the series in 1993, the newly developed engine type D12, a six-cylinder with 12,1 liters capacity was used in the first version D12A. Below the versions D12C, D12D and D12F arrived at FH 12 used.

In 2002, the cab has been redesigned.

It was longer and got a new floor and a new interior. From autumn 2005, the version D13A was in the power classes 295, 325, 360 or 390 kW. With selective catalytic reduction (SCR) he met the Euro 5 emissions standard The second version, the D13B engine was from September 2007 with 295, 325-360 kW. With a system for exhaust gas recirculation it corresponds to the Euro 4 emission standard The main advantage of this EGR solution is a simple installation, as no other systems were needed for exhaust aftertreatment. In addition, a simpler operation without other additives possible. Volvo was the world's only manufacturer of this solution for special applications such as Crane truck has offered not to impair the chassis design by AdBlue tank or any other treatment system. However, the economical SCR solution was recommended for long distance haulage or other applications with high fuel consumption. The actual motor current in FH 13 is the D13C, a straight-six diesel engine with 12.8 liters capacity and charge air cooler and turbocharger. He is the Volvo FH available with 310, 340, 370 or 395 kW and met with the SCR emission standards Euro 5 In the 340, 370 or 395 kW motors is also an EEV version ( Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle ) is possible with lower particulate emissions.

Currently available for the Volvo FH four different cab variants. From a brief without a place to stay, on the long version up to the usual designation of the Volvo Globetrotter and Globetrotter XL - variants which offer enough space for two- driver crews.

Volvo FH 16

The FH 16 is the most motorized version of the FH. It is powered by the D16 in-line six cylinder with 16,1 liters capacity which was taken from the revised Volvo F 16. With 16 liter capacity with direct injection and an engine power of 400, 440 or 515 kW, it is mainly used for heavy duty purposes. The maximum torques of the three engine variants are 2650, 2800 and 3150 Nm. A system for selective catalytic reduction is required to meet the Euro - 5 emissions standard also in this model series. In FH 16 one after the other versions D16A, D16B, D16C, D16E and D16G were used.

3rd Generation since 2013

At the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012 in Hanover Volvo introduced the third generation of the FH. The chassis and the cab are completely new developments, while the known from the previous engines were bzw.überarbeitet taken. Furthermore, a number of new driver assistance systems have been introduced that are designed to improve both the safety and fuel consumption. The 3rd generation is introduced in the various markets in 2013 and was chosen by an international jury of experts from 24 European countries for the Truck of the Year 2014.

Chassis

The FH is available as a chassis as well as a tractor in the following Achs-/Antriebskonfigurationen:

  • 4x2
  • 6x2
  • 6x4
  • 8x2 (not a tractor)
  • 8x4

The 4x2 and 6x2 versions are available on request, for the first time in a heavy truck with independent suspension on the front axle available.

Cab variants

The FH series is already equipped with a long distance traffic cab, which offers accommodation for up to 2 people and an inside height of 171 cm (above the engine tunnel 162 cm).

Alternatively, the variants Globetrotter ( 203/196 cm) and Globetrotter XL ( 222/211 cm).

The three variants differ only in height of the roof; Length and width as well as the mounting height on the chassis are the same for all.

Motors and drive train

The FH is with the following engines / power options available (as at launch ):

The power transmission takes place via an automated 12-speed transmission ( I-Shift ) or optionally via a manual 14-speed gearbox. Both transmissions are (depending on engine torque) and one each with direct top gear or overdrive each available in different versions. In conjunction with I-Shift in addition to the basic software The following software packages are available:

  • Distribution & Building Site Traffic with additional functions to assist in starting or maneuvering
  • Mainline & efficiency with features to reduce fuel consumption, on request with additional I-See
  • Heavy-duty use with optimized shift strategy for gross combination weights about 85t

New driver assistance and safety systems

With the new FH numerous systems have been ( partially for the first time in truck) introduced that should improve ride comfort, safety and fuel consumption, for example,

  • Dynamic cornering lights in conjunction with bi -xenon headlamps
  • Adaptive cruise control, optionally, with ACC brake
  • Alcolock
  • Lane keeping and lane change assistant
  • Emergency brake
  • Driver warning example in fatigue / inattention
  • Pulse stretching brake prevents buckling of the vehicle combination (so-called jack-knife effect) through targeted braking of the trailer
  • In the instrument used integrated display to view additional information ( navigation, fleet management, outdoor cameras, on-board computers, etc. )
  • I- Roll, one in the I-Shift gearbox integrated automatic free-wheeling function
  • I-See, stores the first time driving on a track topography data and controls when driving on routes already saved the cruise control and the I- Shift transmission in terms of reduced fuel consumption
  • Work the remote, a multifunctional car key, with the addition of features such as Air suspension, auxiliary drives, body functions, etc. can be controlled

These systems are partly standard, partly as an optional extra ( summarized in part in packets) available.
