Volvo Open 70

Boats of the Volvo Open 70 class ( short: VO 70) for ocean racing yachts. They are especially designed for participation in the Volvo Ocean Race. The VO70 class builds on the VO60 class and has been repeatedly adapted to the sporting and technical developments in its history.

Description

VO70 v1

A significant change in the rules compared to the previous class VO60 concerns the introduction of the swing keel. Thus, the speed of the boats increased significantly. However, the boats had some still struggling at the launch of the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006 with significant problems with the technique and interpretation. Multiple had to be inserted unscheduled stops for repairs in ports. The Spanish movistar declined even after heavy flooding as a result of damage to the keel suspension.

VO70 v2

Based on the experiences during the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006, a new set of rules was published in September 2006. So for keel fin and only suspension steel and steel alloys were admitted. In addition, certain stress tests were prescribed.

VO70 v3

For the third version of the regulations, the permissible mass of the yachts was increased to 14500 kg. Following the trend of the time the installation of a renewable energy source (solar, wind or towed generator ) of 80 W to support the on-board electrical system was also prescribed. The number of modifications during the test and the number of sails were limited. This is to prevent escalating costs and smaller teams are enabled to participate.
