Volzhsky, Volgograd Oblast

Wolschski (Russian Волжский ) is a large city with 314 255 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in southern Russia in the Volgograd Oblast.

Geography

Wolschski lies on the left bank of the Volga in the amount of the diversion of the river Akhtuba, right on the dam of the Volgograd Reservoir and about 20 km above the regional center of Volgograd. The nearest towns are Krasnoslobodsk, located about 17 km southwest of Wolschski, as well as the adjacent thereto Volgograd.

History

The present city was built from the year 1951; her name is taken directly to the Volga ( Wolschski = literally " Volga City "). Before the 1950s existed at the site of the village Wolschski Besrodnoje; here it existed since the 1720s, and until the 19th century a government silk factory, which was founded on the initiative of Tsar Peter I..
