Von der Decken family

The family of the ceiling is an old Lower Saxon noble family. The center of the family is since more than 750 years in the area of Freiburg / Elbe in the country Kehdingen on the Lower Elbe, there on the south bank of the Elbe between the Oste River and the city of Stade.

History

First records and origin

Here Wart and Alverik of Deca are the first documented members of the family. They were vassals of the knight in 1250 Friedrich von Haselsdorf. Frederick was a canon of the cathedral chapter and Hamburg in 1268 was appointed Bishop of Dorpat.

The family of the ceiling can be up to Nicolaus de Deken trace, a squire of the Bremen pin, which by 1290 had until about 1360 on the Kampe between Wechtern and Freiburg / Elbe a courtyard.

Emergence of the five lines

In 1500 there was the main line of the family and the Stader line 1602 extinct in the male line. In the main line there was the Stade Mayor Claus von der Decken ( 1460-1541 ). Decken in South Africa

A descendant of the Oerichsheiler line, Adolphus (1834-1886), a son of Adolph Melchior (1806-1862), emigrated 1855 from England to South Africa. Of his many descendants, some live with the names of the ceiling in King William 's Town, Fort Beaufort and near Durban.

Coat of arms

The root coat of arms shows a black kettle in silver hook. On the helmet with black and silver ceilings a gestümmelter natural oak trunk with both sides abhängendem green leaf.

Historical coats of arms

The coat of arms of the third line is since 1732 a union of the two families from the ceiling and open. The coat of arms of the family of open is a red wheel with six spokes on a silver background. The baron title in the third line had stock of 1885 until 1969.

Johann Friedrich von der Decken acquired in 1817 Ringelsheim and received in 1833 a Primogen earldom. Adel Legally lives of the title continues with the succession after the " Salic Law" as in the house of Hanover and the House of Liechtenstein. The coat of arms includes eagle, lion and gripping as the ancient coat of arms of the Counts of Ringelsheim.

The Cavalry General Georg von der Decken chose to sign holders, two soldiers from his hussar regiment of the king's German legion. 1835, he was awarded the title of count. The title lasted until the death of his wife Louise, a princess of Hesse.
