Vörå

Maxmo ( Swedish), Finnish Maksamaa, is a former municipality in the west of Finland. Today it is a part of the community Vörå.

Maxmo is located in the western Finnish landscape Ostrobothnia, about 30 km northeast of the city of Vaasa in the archipelago of the Gulf of Bothnia. In addition to the Kirchdorf Maxmo the community included the places Tottesund, Kärklax, Kvimo, Djupsund, Särkimo, Västerö and Österö. More than half of the former municipal district located on islands and skerries. This includes the archipelago Mickelsörarna, as part of the World Heritage Site High Coast / Kvarken UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006. The community Maxmo had an area of ​​153.8 square kilometers ( excluding sea areas ) and last 1,035 inhabitants. Of these, 90 % were Finland Sweden. 8% spoke Finnish as their mother tongue. Officially, the municipality was bilingual.

Originally belonging to the parish Vörå Maxmo received in 1706 a private house of worship, in 1775 it became a chapel community. To an independent parish Maxmo was raised in 1872. As a municipality Maxmo existed until 2006; January 1, 2007 it merged with the neighboring community Vörå the new community Vörå - Maxmo. This united again in early 2011 with Oravais to a new community, which again bears the name Vörå.

The City Council of Maxmo is an old wooden farmhouse in the village of Tottesund; the composer Jean Sibelius married here in 1892.
