The Danish port city Vordingborg ( dt: Vordingborg ) is located in the extreme south of Zealand at Masnedsund. Here the Storstrømsbroen leads to Falster, a combined road and railway bridge, the part of the bird's flight line ( Rail) is. The old municipality was 176.4 km ². Since 1 January 2007, the municipality is the Vordingborg Zealand from the old municipalities Langebæk, Møn, Præstø and Vordingborg. Live in an area of ​​621 km ² now total 45,465 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013). Vordingborg belongs to the parish community Vordingborg Sogn.

Geography

Vordingborg is located about 17 km southwest of Præstø, 28 km west of ridges, 29 km south of Roskilde, 31 km north of Nykøbing, 53 km north-east of Rodby and 92 km south-west of Copenhagen.

History

In 1353 Queen Margaret I was born at a local chateau, which was the most powerful woman in Europe in their time. At Castle Vordingborg the first peace of Vordingborg closed in 1365. Under Margaret's successor King Erik VII occurred in 1435, the second peace of Vordingborg with Count Adolf VIII of looking castle and the cities of the Hanseatic League, under the leadership of Lübeck.

Culture and sights

A well known tourist attraction is the landmark of Vordingborg, the Goose Tower (Danish: Gåsetårn ). It was built from 1362-65 for Valdemar Atterday and is one of the best preserved medieval towers in Scandinavia.
