Võsu

Võsu ( German Wösso ) is a village ( alevik ) in the Estonian Lääne- Viru. It has 507 inhabitants (1 January 2005). Võsu belongs to the rural community Vihula, whose main town and administrative center is Võsu.

Location

Võsu located on the southern shore of the Bay of Käsmu. One about a mile long sandy beach leading into the shallow Baltic Sea at this point. The village is surrounded by pine, spruce and fir forests. In the vicinity of the lake Võsu Käsmu is. East of the river Võsu was formerly the Lake Üllikjärv, which was drained in 1886 for the construction of a manor house. Today, the site is overgrown by forests.

Resort

Võsu was due to its ideal location on the Baltic Sea and its good climate in the second half of the 19th century, a well-known resort and spa of the upper classes of the Russian Empire. Visitors came from St. Petersburg, Moscow and even from the Crimea to enjoy the summer. You could then build about 200 summer houses. In the summer the number of guests went to the resort in the thousands.

It was not until the First World War and the Estonian independence from Russia in 1918 Võsu lost its meaning for the Russian summer tourism. Today Võsu is popular excursion and holiday destination of Estonians again and has a good tourist infrastructure for Estonian conditions.

In Võsu died in 1901, the poet Julie von Hausmann.
