The Time Traveler ( Original Title: Voyager ) is an American television series that aired from 1982 to 1983 on the U.S. television network NBC. In Germany, the series was shown in 1989 at RTLplus.

Action

Phineas Bogg is a member of a society of time travelers, who describe themselves as " Voyagers " ( travelers ). Phineas and the 11 -year-old Jeffrey Jones travel with the help of a small portable time machine, called Omni ( similar to a pocket watch ), by the time and make sure that the story developed as we know it. In the first episode they help, for example, Moses as an infant, so he is found in his basket on the Nile by the daughter of Pharaoh. Bogg first encounter with Jeffrey, as it be Omni due to a malfunction in the year 1982 brings ( the Omni is programmed trips in the period after 1970 not to allow ) and he ends up in Jeffrey's room, after the death of his parents, aunt, his lives. In episode 13 ( innocent in court), however, it turns out that Jeffrey was scheduled by the Voyager headquarters as a time traveler, and Boggs landing in 1982 was not an oversight. In an attempt to save Boggs "Handbook of History" by Jeffreys dog " Ralph ," the boy out the window and Bogg crashes have no other choice than him nachzuspringen and to take him to a different time. Boggs manual remains, however. It turns out that Jeffrey's father was a professor of history and therefore also Jeffrey itself has a great knowledge of history, which is why he has been with Phineas on his travels, which must rely on Jeffreys knowledge without its manual to interpret the historical events properly.

"Running gags " in the series are Phineas Boggs downright embarrassing ignorance of contemporary history, making its dependence on Jeffrey after losing his manual all the more evident his terrified of dogs, and his poker - playing, in which he laid down the rules of an old Hungarian card game called " Schnibbitz " plays and yet always wins. In addition, Bogg is a charmer who manages to fall in love almost every adventure into a contemporary beauty.

The series shows many historical figures such as Marco Polo, Albert Schweitzer, Cleopatra, Thomas Edison and Benjamin Franklin, and makes them easily to viewers (usually children) familiar.

During the credits of each episode, the actor Meeno Peluce says: "If you [ whoever was seen in the episode ] more about want to know under take a trip to the local library. It's all in the books! "

The name Phineas Bogg is a nod to Phileas Fogg of Jules Verne Around the World in 80 Days. In the last episode of the series Bogg is addressed to the similarity of the name, which he declares himself to be Jules Verne met and to have supplied him with the inspiration for the character of Phileas Fogg.

The Time Machine

In the series, the little time machine of the Voyagers is called " Omni " and has the shape of a gold pocket watch. Phineas Bogg she usually wears on his belt. In the middle of the unit, there is a miniature version of a globe surrounded by sliders that allow you the exact time (as well as the spot on the basis of the globe ) can determine to which you want to travel. Two light signals - one red and one green - provide information on whether the events in the appropriate time period are correct (green) or whether an intervention of the Voyagers is required ( red).

Omnis must be well kept by the Voyagers, because in principle everyone can use the unit who finds it. In the episode " Worlds Apart " Thomas Edison breaks the time machine in all its component parts, to find out how to work the red and green lights. However, he was also able to assemble the unit again after seeing it - had properly cleaned - by the way. The Omnis of the function will be explained in the opening credits of each episode of Phineas Bogg: "We travel through time, to help history along, give it a push where it's needed. When the omni 's red, It Means history 's wrong, it 's our job to get everything back on track " ( " We travel through time to the story on the jumps to help., When the Omni is red, it means the story evolves wrong, and it is our job to steer them back on the right track. " ) the Omni Phineas ' opponent, the Voyager Drake is silver.

The Omni is engraved: "Time Waits for No Man" ( "Time waits for no one ").

On the fact that the course of history as we know it (and the Voyagers are trying to maintain it ), can not be correct if the story would have developed differently without the intervention of the Voyagers and therefore not to be right or wrong view of future assessable is not discussed in detail during the entire series.

The " Guide Book"

The Voyagers of the manual was given to them as part of a "time travel course" at the " Voyagers school". It must be kept secret, because it contains important events of the past, present and future. Based on the manual, the Voyagers can find out what is going wrong in the story when the indicator light of Omnis red. In the pilot episode Phineas loses his " Guide Book". The book is mentioned in various episodes (eg Voyagers of the Titanic ).
