Voyennes

Voyennes ( oldest known form of the name Vienna ) is a commune with 611 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the department of Somme in the Picardie region of northern France. It belongs to the canton of Nesle and is part of the Communauté de communes du Pays Neslois.

Geography

The municipality is situated on the D89 road department and the Canal de la Somme, near the mouth of the Canal du Nord. The place was the starting point for an excursion train, which was decommissioned in 1954. The train station Voyennes - Hombleux SNCF was shut down in 1973.

History

Finds evidence of a settlement already in Gallo-Roman times. In the 10th century the city came under the protection of the Knights Templar. In 1415 Henry V crossed from England after the Battle of Agincourt here the Somme. During the First World War, the church was badly damaged.

Economy

Voyennes still possessed at the beginning of the 20th century a significant horticulture. The goods dissipation was largely on the completed in 1827, Canal de la Somme.

Church of Saint- Étienne

The Romanesque building was completely destroyed during the First and Second World Wars. The modern church has a bas-relief of the old church.
