VR Class Sm1

The Finnish State Railways VR is procured from 1969 to 1973 a total of 50 electric railcars of Sm1 series. The mechanical part is by Valmet in Tampere and the electrical part comes from Strömberg in Pitäjänmäki, Helsinki.

They are used in regional traffic and in the Helsinki commuter train.

The railcar always associate with a control cars of the Eio series. Both vehicles each have 90 seats. Each axis of the railcar has two engines. The maximum acceleration amounts to 0.8 m / s ².

Due to the progressive electrification, it was necessary to raise additional railcars. This series looks very similar to the Sm1 Sm2. The Sm1 series, by 2010, ordered by the delivered between 1998 and 2005 trains Sm4 series and the 2006 Stadler, will be replaced as the class Sm5 set trains. However, in 2011, the Sm1 are still numerous in daily use on the go.
