Vratislav Mazák

Vratislav Mazák [ vracɪslaf maza ː k] ( born June 22, 1937 in Kutna Hora, † September 9, 1987 in Prague) was a Czechoslovakian scientist and zoologist.

Career

Mazák was an employee at the Prague Zoo and a specialist in the field of lions. Thanks to his research in the years 1960-70 we now know much about the 1850 extinct Cape Lions (Panthera leo melanochaita ), which were native to the vast plains of South Africa west of the Great Escarpment. He studied almost all the lions in European museums and brought in several scientific journals descriptions of extinct lion out.

Mazák was the first to describe the now endangered Indochinese tiger (Panthera tigris corbetti ).
