Vrhnika

Vrhnika ( German Upper Laibach, Italian Nauporto ) is a municipality in the Inner Carniola region of Slovenia.

Location and population

In the overall community consisting of 25 villages and hamlets 15,544 people live. The main town Vrhnika alone has 7,520 inhabitants and is located on 293 m. It is drained by the ljubljanica. The community is located approximately 21 km southwest of Ljubljana on the edge of the Ljubljana moor.

History

Since ancient times people were resident in the area around Vrhnika. So a wooden spearhead was found in the river bed of the ljubljanica whose age is estimated to 40,000 years. Occupied the site of the present city to the Roman period a settlement with castle and harbor, bearing the name Nauportus. The Greek geographer Strabo reports that cargo were transported from Aquileia on trucks over the pass in the Birnbaumer Wald (Ad Pirum ) to Nauportus. From there they were loaded onto ships and transported via the rivers ljubljanica and Save farther to the east. In the 12th century, the present-day town Vrhnika was mentioned as top Ljubljana for the first time in writing. At the beginning of the 20th century uses the industrialization and 1955 Vrhnika was then raised to the final city.
