Geographical location

The frieze - road (also de Vries Street, Russian Пролив Фриза, Proliv Friza ) is a strait between two main islands of the Kuril Islands. It is situated between the north-eastern tip of Iturup and the southwest headland of Urup. It connects the Sea of ​​Okhotsk to the west with the Pacific Ocean on the east. Its width is 42 km.

The street was named after the Dutch explorer Maarten Gerritszoon de Vries, the first known Europeans who explored the region in 1643.
