VSE (operating system)

Z / VSE ( Virtual Storage Extended) is an operating system for IBM mainframe computers. The development takes place mainly in Boeblingen in Germany at IBM Germany Research & Development GmbH instead. It is not as widespread as z / OS and is mostly used on smaller systems. z / VSE is the successor of VSE / ESA, VSE / SP, DOS / VSE, DOS / VS and DOS/360. The roots of z / VSE are therefore in the 1960s and the System/360.

Description

Since 25 November 2011, the latest version 5.1 of the IBM System z operating system is available. With z / VSE V5.1 64 -bit virtual addressing is supported for the first time.

Z / VSE originally supported only 24 -bit addressing. When further developed the underlying hardware, led z / VSE support for 31- bit addressing a. In March 2007, IBM has the z / VSE Version 4 released. z / VSE Version 4 supports the z / Architecture.

IBM recommends that customers continue to have a Linux on System z, run alongside the z / VSE on the same system. This 64- bit Linux system can expand z / VSE applications and access z / VSE applications and data across HyperSockets. It can also be used on Linux on System z, a variety of middleware products.

The interface for batch processes is JCL (Job Control Language ). Similarly, there is an interface for z / VSE panel operators. CICS is one of the most widely used transaction monitors and is very common in z / VSE clients. CICS now supports the latest innovations such as Web services. DB2 is also available for z / VSE.

Z / VSE as well as z / OS supports traditional 3270 terminal as a user interface. Most customers but have now begun to realize requests using a Web browser to their applications. The TCP / IP implementation is a separately with charge product for historical reasons and is offered in two different versions of two software manufacturers. Most customers today use TCP / IP.

The operating system z / VSE celebrated in March 2009, already his 44th birthday. The current (October 2009) available version is the version published in October 2008 z / VSE 4.2. With z / VSE 4.1, IBM introduced a 64- bit real addressing. The mid-2009 obsolete version of z / VSE 3.1 was the last one with 31-bit mainframes compatible version, version 4.1 or later versions need a 64 - bit-compatible mainframe server.
