Vufflens -le- Château is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Vufflens -le- Château is located on 473 m above sea level. M., 2.5 km north-west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The village stretches along the edge of a plateau west of the Valley of Morges, Vaud in Plateau at a scenic location around 100 m above the lake level of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​2.1 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Mittelland in the hinterland of Morges. Most of the community land is occupied by the plateau of Vufflens; the highest point is 515 meters above sea level. M. at La Pale. The northern boundary is formed by the creek Curbit, which opens into the Morges. Population

With 794 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Vufflens -le- Château is one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1011 under the name Wuolflinges. Later published numerous other names: Wolf Lens ( 1096 ), Wuoflens ( 1108) Volflens and Vorflens ( 1142 ), Wuolflens ( 1175 ), Woflens, Wulf Lens castrum ( 1228 ), Wfleins ( 1238 ) and Wfleyns ( 1282). The name goes back to the Burgundian personal names Wulfilo and means for the people of Wulfilo.

The place was in the Middle Ages seat of the Lords of Vufflens and came in 1235 as a fief to the Lords of Cossonay. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Vufflens -le- Château came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. After the collapse of the ancien régime, the village belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Morges.

Attractions

The village is dominated by the imposing Castle Vufflens. The brick building, inspired by Piedmontese palace buildings, was built in 1420-1430 on the ruins of a medieval castle of the noble family of Colombier, and one of the major palace buildings in western Switzerland. The most striking building is the 60 m high square donjon. This is surrounded by four lower towers that are connected by a parapet with Machicolation. The keep is separated by a courtyard from the east adjoining residential buildings. Also, this is flanked by four round corner towers and provided with a pitch nose ring. The castle, which was built in 1860 restored, is now privately owned, which excludes a public tour.
