Vugelles-La Mothe

Vugelles -La Mothe is a municipality in the district of Jura-Nord Vaudois in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Vugelles la Mothe is located 7 km north-west of the district capital Yverdon- les- Bains ( straight line ). The two villages Vugelles (520 m above sea level. M. ) and La Mothe ( 548 m above sea level. M. ) are located in the valley of the Arnon, at the foot of the Jura, at the foot of the Chasseron.

The area of ​​3.1 km ² large municipality area includes a small section of the Jura south slope. The southern part of the municipality is crossed from west to east from the valley of the Arnon, which here runs parallel to the Jura. South of this valley extends the communal land on the Jura plateau upstream (up to 580 m above sea level. M. ). To the north, the area extends up the steep slope of the Jura to the forest glade La Crochère, on with 1'050 meters above sea level. M. the highest point of Vugelles -La Mothe is achieved. The Jura south slope ( Côte de Vugelles ) is forested in the range of Vugelles -La Mothe and partially crossed by rock walls. On the lower slopes of the Jura forms three sources Fontannets de La Mothe. From the municipality surface 1997 60 % was forest and shrubs, 35 % to agriculture, 4% on settlements, and slightly more than 1% was unproductive land.

The double municipality consists of the villages of Vugelles and La Mothe and several hamlets. Neighboring communities of Vugelles la Mothe are Novalles, Giez, Orges, Vuiteboeuf and Bullet.

Population

With 116 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) Vugelles -La Mothe one of the smallest municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the residents, 81.8 % are French-speaking, 14.1% in German and 2.0% English speaking (as of 2000). The population of Vugelles la Mothe amounted in 1900 to 349 inhabitants. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century by strong emigration by 70 % to 108 persons ( 1960), the population has since remained fairly stable.

Economy

Vugelles -La Mothe was until the late 19th century, a predominantly shaped by the agriculture community. In 1526, the first paper mill in Snowshoes was founded in Arnon. Towards the end of the 19th century the town experienced an economic boom, as a bell foundry, a game can plant and alighted a gemstone. After the production in these factories had to be closed as a result of the economic crisis of the 1930s, there was a massive exodus.

Today, the crop and livestock farming have again an important role in the economic structure of the population. Some other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available. In recent decades, Vugelles -La Mothe has also developed into a residential community. Some employed persons are therefore commuters who work primarily in the area of Yverdon.

Traffic

The community is located off the major thoroughfares on a road from Vuiteboeuf along the Jura foothills after Fontaines- sur -Grandson. Also from Yverdon is Vugelles -La Mothe easily accessible. By Postbus course, which runs from Yverdon Novalles, Vugelles and La Mothe are connected to the public transport network.

History

The first mention of Vugelles was in 1228 under the name Vouzela. Later, the names Wouzala ( 1260 ), Vougala ( 1370 ), Vougella ( 1403 ) and Vougellaz ( 1453) appeared. The place name is derived vouerdze of the local dialect form ( green alder ). La Mothe was also first mentioned in 1228 as La Mottaz, which means as much as fortified hill.

Vugelles and La Mothe belonged in the Middle Ages, first to rule Pittet. At the beginning of the 14th century the villages were separated from this rule, and the new rule La Mothe was founded. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 came Vugelles -La Mothe under the administration of the Bailiwick of Yverdon. After the collapse of the ancien régime the community from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic belonged to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the district of Yverdon. Until 1849 formed Vugelles -La Mothe a larger municipality, which included the villages Orges and Longeville.

Attractions

The Protestant parish church was built in Vugelles time in pre-Reformation and later rebuilt several times. On a small hill in La Mothe are the ruins of posts originating from the 14th century castle of the reign of La Mothe.
