Vught

( Listen? / I ) Vught is a municipality in the Netherlands, North Brabant province. It has 25,560 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013). Their total area is 34.50 km ². To Vught includes the westernmost picturesque farming village Cromvoirt.

Location and economic

Vught is located on the River Dommel, about 3.5 km south of the provincial capital of 's- Hertogenbosch. In Vught, the railway line from Hertogenbosch shares to Tilburg and Eindhoven in the south-west south-southeast direction. Here Vught has a small railway station; a stop on the line to Tilburg is " in study". The A2 - Hertogenbosch Eindhoven highway runs through Vught ( with branching A65/N65 direction Tilburg ).

Vught is a suburb of Hertogenbosch. About half of the employed population works in the northern neighboring town. In Vught there are several nursing homes, including a psychiatric hospital. Even the city jail of 's-Hertogenbosch is in Vught.

History

Vught The name goes back to the humidity of the area in the former floodplain of the Dommel back ( vught = " wet "). Is about the history of Vught before the 19th century, apart from a place granted to the Customs Law in 1028, virtually nothing is known.

1844 were built in Vught eight " lunettes ," crescent-shaped fortifications. They belonged to the castle of 's-Hertogenbosch. Vught was an important location of the army, including the pioneer troops; yet there are several former military barracks in the village.

South of the town sand was recovered from about 1890 by a steam engine -driven system. In the vernacular, this machine was called " de ijzeren you " ( the Iron Man ). The resulting sand extraction lake, now a recreation area with a beach, received the same name.

In January 1943, the KZ -Hertogenbosch was built in Vught by the occupying German troops. This was in part after the independence of Indonesia in 1949 as a residence for Moluccan immigrants ( holland faithful locals and Dutch, many of them professional soldiers ) was established. Since many of these Moluccans, even after the evacuation in the Netherlands, the KNIL ( Koninklijk Nederlandsch - Indian Leger, German: Royal Dutch Indian Army ) known, they refused to regard themselves as civilians, and continued to live in the barracks including in those of the former concentration camp. In 1970, she then had to move to "normal" homes. Still living in Vught many Dutch Moluccan origin.

Attractions

  • The remnants of the former concentration camp Hertogenbosch (Dutch Kamp Vught ) can be visited. A national monument is located on " Fusilladeplaats " ( shooting site ).
