Vuhledar

Wuhledar (Ukrainian Вугледар; Russian Угледар / Ugledar ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine with 15,408 inhabitants ( 2013), which lives mainly from coal mining.

The city is located in the southwest of the Donbass Donetsk oblast 60 km southwest of Oblastzentrum Donetsk.

History

Founded at the beginning of the development of the Southern Donets Basin in 1964 with the name Piwdennyj Donetsk (Ukrainian Південний Донецьк ), the city as a major industrial city with a population of one hundred thousand inhabitants and more than ten mines was planned. After the development of the coal deposits in the southern Donets Basin in the seventies was estimated as less promising than in the Kuzbass but was only a smaller city. In 1969, the settlement was renamed in Wuhledar. 1991 Wuhledar received the status of a city.

Population

According to the census of 2001 were 63.1 % of the urban population and 33.1% of Ukrainian -Russian nationality.
