The HVDC short coupling Vyborg, located about nine kilometers east of Vyborg in Russia, is the only high-voltage direct -current transmission -to-back in Russia.

The plant went into operation in 1982 and has a transmission capacity of 1065 MW. At the time, this was the highest transmission power of all HVDC Kurzkupplungen world. It uses three bipolar converter with an operating voltage of 85 kV. In contrast to most other HVDC systems no bi-directional energy transfer, but only from Russia to Finland is possible. Since the synchronous circuit of the power grids of the Eastern and Western European countries in 1995, this facility is the only way for Russia to export electric energy in western states.
