Vyshhorod

Vyshhorod (Ukrainian Вишгород; Russian Вышгород / Vyshgorod ) is a town of about 27,000 inhabitants (2011 ), 20 km north of Kiev and the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

Geography

The city is located in the Kiev Oblast at the southern end of the Kiev Sea, on the right side of the Dnieper River near the mouth of which opens from left Desna. North of the city in the village of Novi Petriwzi the property is located Meschyhirja, the residence of Viktor Yanukovych, the President of Ukraine.

History

Vyshhorod was founded in 946 AD. Only in 1968 was the place the municipal law.

During the Second World War, the lakes formed in the Central Ukraine a lock on the west vorziehende Red Army. It suffered heavy losses in 1943 Vyshhorod, because south of the Kiev Sea, there were more appropriate ways to cross the Dnepr. Near the Desnamündung there was heavy fighting, because Soviet troops there focused their struggles. The fighting had the consequence that the crypt of the Holy Martyrs Boris and Gleb, the patron saint of the Kiev Empire, was destroyed. This was built up in 2010. A monument to the patron saint, was unveiled at the town celebration on 30 July 2011 before the town hall and consecrated by the Ukrainian Orthodox Bishop of Kiev region.

Sports

From 29 to 31 July 2011, the first worldwide advertised F1 Powerboat Racing ( F1H2O ) was held, which attracted more than 80,000 spectators. The team from Abu Dhabi won the victory. The World Cup race for the years 2012-2015 are already contractually secured for Vyshgorod.
